The Green Revolution

The green revolution was an approach in agriculture to provide food for human by large scale cultivation and extensive use of chemicals. It appeared to be successful at the first, but it eventually couldn’t keep up with the human’s population growth. The main factors of this failure is the need of expensive chemicals and equipments. Another factor is erosion, that is caused by large scale farming of a single crop and the increasing dosage of the slowly destructing chemicals that the farmers used. Beside that, the green revolution has caused a political conflict. the rich dominate the poor’s land and it increased social tension. Finally, the governments have to open their eyes and find a new method that can keep up with the world’s population and less destructive than the green revolution.

A mobile phone, often called handphone, is a long-ranged, electronic device that used for mobile telecommunications over a cellular network provided by a specialized base station known as cell sites. Originally founded in 1908, the idea of making communication easier and mobile has advanced and evolved into a superb, great device that has a significant effect in the communication industries. The idea was officially applied into a mobile, wireless phone in 1969 by George Sweigert. Then, the mobile phones keep evolving and finally, in 1991, Radiolinja released a gadget what we call GSM mobile phones today. Mobile phones have two fundamental functions, which is making a call and sending a text message. As opposed to the radio telephone, a mobile phone offers a wide range of communications, and more importantly, it is mobile. The current mobile phones have evolved to a multifunction gadget. Moreover, it even took over functions that used to be found in other electronic devices. Thus, the keep-advancing technology in mobile phone industries will be able to not only connect people with the world, but also brings ease in their lives.

Mobile phones are used for a variety of reasons including keeping in touch with family members, conducting business, or used in the event of an emergency. People used to only use the primary function of the mobile function, which is making a call and sending a text message. But now, the technology keep advancing and it even take parts in functions that originally don’t belong to a phone. They provide e-mail, web services, messengers, and even capable of accessing blogs. A notable feature that has become a phenomenon is wi-max. Wi-max allows people to make a free call to people all over the world in a wi-fi covered area. It is really helpful for those who have worldwide businesses that involve people in other countries. Nowadays, mobile phones have become an obligation to everyone, including children. It offers a communication that connects people and the world. It allows people to check out their friend wherever they are, to stay connected in a messenger, or in a social web. The communication functions it contains support the modern lifestyle that needs a high mobility in the intensive and busy activities.

Other functions used in mobile phones are their additional features, such as camera, music player, picture and video gallery, pocket dictionary and office applications, camera, video and picture gallery, and games. The features mentioned above are dedicated to make people’s lives easier and they are not ordinary features. It feels like carrying a bunch of electronic gadget in one device. Camera, for example has reached 8.0 megapixels built-in a mobile phone. Compared to the real digital pocket camera, that reaches about 12.0 megapixels resolution, people will prefer to only carry a mobile phone instead weighing their bags by carrying two devices. Pocket dictionary and office applications also enable people to do businesses without carrying a laptop. By only carrying a mobile phone, they will be able to transfer a word document, or presentation with their business partners.

The technology in mobile phone industries is keep advancing. The features provided by the vendors keep growing. They provide unimagined features that bring ease to people’s lives. Knowing the positive effects on the societies, we should use it wisely. As if there is advancement in technology, there must be unforeseen consequences. We shouldn’t get too carried in this technology advancement. We should filter out and criticize every single thing that is going into our lives, so that we can maximize the functions of the advanced technology.

The Potential Threat of Mass Extinction due to the Worsening Global Warming

Methane hydrate, also called methane clathrate or methane ice, is a crystal structure of water ice that consisted of large amount of methane. This hydrate originally thought to only occur in the outer regioins of solar system where temperature is low. In fact, there are significant deposits of this hydrate under sediments on the ocean floors of Earth. Furthermore, it is also found in polar continental sedimentary rocks and deep lakes such as Lake Baikal, Siberia. This hydrate can only be formed in extremely cold temperature. Primarily, this hydrate can be used for alternative fuel, but the gas emission it has is about 60 times worse than CO2. Unfortunately, the heat and climate change caused by the global warming, will probably release all the methane hydrates to the atmosphere. Thus, the methane hydrates scattered in all around the world will meltdown and cause a great global warming in approximately four years.

Basically, methane hydrate has an extremely high melting poin, means it is hard to be melted. Unfortunately, accelerated global warming had caused too much pain to the nature that makes today much more hotter than 10 years ago. The temperature required to melt the “eternal ice” is accomplished by today’s heat. For comparison, the gradual global warming due to some natural causes, had made today hotter by 5 to 7 centigrade than average. At this point, methane trapped in methsane hydrate deposits started to be released into the atmosphere and will also contribute to the extreme acceleration of global warming. Then, more methane will be released due to the increasing temperature, and so the cycle continues and caused a great global warming. This is proved by the melting of the eternal lake of Baikal in Siberia and the increasing volume of sea water gathered from the melting north pole.

The extensive deposits of methane hydrate is predicted to be finished by the end of year 2012, four years from now. The prediction made by scientists all over the world, is based on how we live today, our bad habits of hurting the mother Earth. It will continue,a nd cannot be stopped.Worse, it’s not only continuous, but also accelerated. As soon as enough methane is released into the atmosphere, it will break the ozone layer and destroy the thinning protective layer of the Earth. Considering the extensive methane provided in all around the Earth, it will cause a drastic climate change. The heat that is going to occur, is never be imagined. The releasing methane will cause an uncontrollable climate change, that had happened million years ago, and succeeded in causing a mass extinction, known as the Permian-triassic extinction event.

The extensive methane hydrate deposits, originally thought to be eternal, is in the proccess of annihilating human’s lives. It is also accelerated by the global warming. Due to the fact that people’s lives are shortened, it is wise to change our habits. It is wise to increase our awareness to the Earth. This disaster is originated from us. We live, we produce, we consume, we exploit, and we have no responsible to the nature. Our ego caused this disaster happen. The biggest disaster is near, and wont be stopped. It is also wise for us to change our living habits, knowing that we dont have much time before anopther mass extinction occur.
